KATHERINE MELANÇON

Katherine Melançon’s practice focuses on the nexus between the natural and the technological. More recently, her work has explored the agency of non-human living things — what would the world be, what would art be, if created by non-human beings. Often using scans of natural specimens as a starting point, these new “seeds” are planted in different materials, thereby exploring the flow of images in cycles of metamorphosis between physical and digital “soils.”
Melançon has an MFA from Central Saint Martins in London, UK, and a B.A. in Interactive Media from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). She lives and works in Montreal. She is currently on the Sobey Art Award 2022 longlist, representing Quebec.

La pratique de Katherine Melançon s’intéresse à la rencontre entre le naturel et le technologique et plus récemment à l’agentivité des êtres vivants non-humains ; que serait le monde, l'art, s'ils étaient créés avec le vivant non-humain? De quelle façon ce changement des structures de pouvoir peut-il nous transformer? Prenant souvent comme point de départ la scanographie de spécimens naturels, ces nouvelles « semences » sont plantées dans différents matériaux, explorant ainsi la fluidité des images dans des cycles de métamorphose entre des « sols » physiques et numériques.
Katherine a obtenu une maîtrise en beaux-arts à la Central Saint Martins de Londres, Royaume-Uni, et un baccalauréat en médias interactifs de l’UQAM. En 2022, elle fait partie de la liste préliminaire du prix Sobey pour l’art contemporain au Canada.
